The latest New York Mets trade rumors involve the Cleveland Indians’ front office desire for the Mets to negotiate a trade for Francisco Lindor this winter.

The Cleveland Indians are officially open for business in regards to star shortstop Francisco Lindor and with that being said they are first making their way onto the list of New York Mets trade rumors. According to MLB reporter Jon Morosi, the organization would love for the Mets to be heavily involved in the bidding for the 26-year old shortstop this winter.

While it is not expected for any kind of deal for Lindor to materialize soon for various reasons, the intentions of the Indians front office have now been publicly made known and their intentions have now become a Mets rumor that has caught fire. The Mets who will certainly be among one of the most active teams this winter have long been pegged as one of the most logical landing spots for Lindor this offseason should he be dealt.

For the Mets to acquire the four-time All-Star this offseason, it certainly will cost them one of their young shortstops in Amed Rosario or Andres Gimenez. In addition to one of those shortstops, the Indians may also be interested in young Major League controllable talent such as third baseman J.D. Davis, outfielder Brandon Nimmo, or first baseman Dominic Smith. Lastly, it would be widely expected for the Mets to have to part with a top ten prospect in their Minor League system as well.

Will the asking be worth the price that the Mets would have to pay to acquire Lindor? Absolutely. It’s not very often a player who is the best at own his position and is considered to be a top ten player in the league becomes available to be had.

This is a move the Mets would never be able to make in previous seasons due to financial constraints with previous ownership. However, with new owner Steve Cohen taking over the reins the Mets now have the cash to extend Lindor after the 2021 season, as well as the pieces to make a deal happen. This is what makes Mets trade rumors like these more realistic in happening than other Mets trade rumors in year’s past.

The Mets certainly should consider taking a page out of the Los Angeles Dodgers handbook from this past offseason after they added outfielder Mookie Betts and the 28-year old outfielder helped propel the Dodgers over the hump and to their first World Series title since 1988. As also seen with Yoenis Cespedes’ acquisition back in 2015, sometimes a high caliber player can reenergize a team and propel them to new heights.

Certainly from the Indians’ perspective, it would be in their best interest to have the Mets involved in any kind of trade discussions this winter to field the best possible return package. While it’s currently unknown how Lindor’s market will play out with many teams around the league possibly not taking too many financial risks this offseason, the Mets may have the upper hand in that regard to trade discussions.
