Mets make the playoffs but just barely

I think the Mets do make the playoffs this year. Pete Alonso will heat up, Michael Conforto will continue to tear up the league, and the club will manage to outplay the Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals.

Beating up the Marlins and Nationals are key to the Mets making the playoffs this year. I think the Philadelphia Phillies will finish in second behind the Atlanta Braves, leaving the Mets to fight for one of the final two spots.

The American League has done a fine job at beating up on the National League teams this year. We’ll need to hope this trend continues. The powerhouses in that league must continue to take care of business versus the fringe playoff teams in the NL for the Metropolitans to go beyond game 60. I think it happens but just barely.

Once the Mets do get to the postseason, all bets are off. I think they can win a short series against a superior team. deGrom changes everything and can defeat anyone he has to.

Beyond that, the Mets may run into some trouble. How will Seth Lugo or David Peterson perform in their first playoff starts? As much as I trust them in the regular season, there’s something about going against a team like the Los Angeles Dodgers in the playoffs that scares me.

The last three weeks of the 2020 season should be fun. We’ll know a little more about the battle between Andres Gimenez and Amed Rosario for shortstop. We should also get a better taste of which free agents are worth bringing back next year and which ones we can wish well in their future endeavors.
