The New York Mets and their ace Jacob deGrom have struggled against the Milwaukee Brewers over the last three seasons.
When the New York Mets and Jacob deGrom face the Milwaukee Brewers, smooth sailing is never guaranteed. In 8 starts against the Brewers, deGrom has gone an even 3-3. However, it’s his 4.80 ERA which is surprisingly troublesome.
deGrom has some of the strangest splits out there. I’m not sure if there’s any other pitcher out there with as great of an ERA against some teams with as poor of a record as deGrom.
For instance, he entered 2020 with a 7-7 record against the Atlanta Braves but a 1.97 ERA. In a similar fashion, he has a 2.43 ERA against the Pittsburgh Pirates yet a 1-3 record in 6 starts.

deGrom’s results against the Brewers is far worse than it is against any other team he has seen more than once. The Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers both beat him up. The difference between them and Milwaukee is that deGrom has only faced off against each of them once.
The ERAs deGrom has against every National League team—other than the Brewers—is below 4.00. Milwaukee is an extreme outlier for one of the game’s best and most consistent pitchers.
In 2019, deGrom had his opportunity to change the narrative against the Brewers. Unfortunately, he faced them in late April when he was going through a rare slump. Milwaukee defeated the Mets 10-2 with deGrom allowing five earned runs in four innings of work.
The Brewers were lucky enough to miss deGrom in his magical 2018 season. A year earlier, they scored 11 runs in 10 innings against him over the course of two May starts. He managed to escape with a no-decision in one of the outings, but the Mets took the loss in each.
The Mets haven’t been lucky against the Brewers during the last three years. In 2019, they were 1-5. They went 3-4 versus Milwaukee in 2018 and 2-5 in 2017. It’s understandable why. During the Mets’ best days of the 2010s, the Brewers were in rebuild mode. The two recently switched spots in the National League standings.
Even so, one might expect deGrom to at least put on a clinic against them. Unfortunately, this one team has been his clear Achilles heel during the last three years and his team hasn’t been much help either.
It’s a sample size of three starts, sure. But to get battered around as much as he has against them is still a shock.

One of the best attributes of deGrom is his ability to avoid getting blown out. Too often, the Brewers have been able to put a hurting on him.
