Recent New York Mets trade rumors have reported the New York Yankees have checked in on the availability of pitcher Steven Matz.

It seems we cannot go a season without some New York Mets trade rumors involving their crosstown rival New York Yankees. In the latest installment of Mets trade rumors, it’s Steven Matz whose name has appeared in the behind the scenes whispers.

According to Mike Puma and Ken Davidoff of the New York Post, the Yankees have checked with the Mets about the availability of Matz. Viewed by many as the team’s fifth starter currently in competition with Michael Wacha, it would make sense why Brian Cashman gave Brodie Van Wagenen a ring.

Matz is coming off a season where he posted numbers nearer to his career averages than any other. In 30 starts plus a pair of relief appearances, the lefty starter went 11-10 with a 4.21 ERA.

For years, Mets fans have been hopeful Matz could return to his early days back in 2015 and 2016. As you may recall, he made an impressive debut with six starts in 2015, going 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA.

A year later, he followed it up with another impressive performance. This time, with 20 starts, Matz went 9-8 with a 3.40 ERA.

In the years since, Matz has fallen into the category far too many players on this team seem to. We’re not quite sure what he is. At times, he has looked like a wonderful mid-rotation arm. Other times he’s barely a number five.

We see the Yankees appear in these Mets trade rumors for obvious reasons. The Yankees are already down two starters with James Paxton missing a few months and Luis Severino out for the entire season. This was supposed to be the year they waltz to the World Series. Questions about their rotation could make it more of a battle with the rest of the American League.

Matz is hardly the same pitcher as other Mets arms mentioned in trade rumors with the Yankees over the last three years. Remember in 2018 when Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard were constantly mentioned?

Even though Matz is a lesser pitcher than those two, it’s highly unlikely we see these two New York teams make a swap. It’s simply something they just don’t do.

This won’t stop fans, bloggers, and radio talk show hosts from speculating about potential trade scenarios.
