According to MLB Trade Rumors, New York Mets pitcher Marcus Stroman is entering 2020 as the seventh-best player who is set to become a free agent next winter.

We’re still weeks away from the beginning of the 2020 MLB season and even further away from the next class of free agents. Nevertheless, talk about who is in the final year of their contract has already begun as fans anticipate what their rosters will look like one year from now. A member of the New York Mets is already in the top ten of next offseason’s free agent class with pitcher Marcus Stroman coming in at number seven on MLB Trade Rumors’ list.

Stroman’s spot on this list can certainly change for a variety of reasons. The six men ahead of him could always sign an extension. Stroman may always get one himself—as doubtful as it seems.

Classified as a groundball pitcher, Stroman should get plenty of attention next winter. He becomes a free agent at the ripe young age of 29.

The stars are aligned for Stroman to have a great year with the Mets in 2020 and get paid handsomely next winter. Odds are, the better he pitches this year, the less likely it is we see him return for 2021.

The Mets wisely extended Jacob deGrom last winter, finally putting some big dollars on the pitching staff. For several years, the team got by with guys on rookie deals or under arbitration eligibility.

Things are now beginning to change with their young rotation growing up before our eyes. Zack Wheeler already left for Philadelphia this past winter. Stroman could be the next member out the door.

MLB Trade Rumors expect Stroman to look for something in the ballpark of a four-year deal worth around $68 million. As they noted, this is what Nathan Eovaldi and Miles Mikolas. Stroman could even pursue a five-year deal. He certainly has a longer track-record than those two.

It feels inevitable that we will soon see Stroman pitching for another team outside of Flushing. It’s hard to imagine Brodie Van Wagenen signs him to a deal then hands out yet another one to Noah Syndergaard the following winter.

For all the Mets gave up to land Stroman last summer, I think we’re going to have to hope we get an unprecedented year to remember out of him in 2020.
