At the Winter Meetings, there were New York Mets trade rumors about the team checking in on Carlos Correa. The latest suggests there wasn’t much to it.

One of the biggest New York Mets trade rumors to come out of the Winter Meetings involved Houston Astros shortstop Carlos Correa. During the Brodie Van Wagenen regime, the Mets have been heavily involved rumors for multiple players on the trade block. Like many of those, these Mets trade rumors have nothing behind it.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, these Mets trade rumors may have been taken a little too seriously. He called them “more fantasy baseball” than serious.

It never hurts to check in on a player’s availability—especially one with Correa’s pedigree. At only 25, he has established himself as one of the best shortstops in the game. Unfortunately, health has not been on his side over the past three seasons. Since debuting in 2015, Correa has only played in more than 110 games once.

There are many factors which would prevent the Mets from proceeding with a deal for Correa further. First and foremost is the expected cost. The Mets would likely need to hand over Amed Rosario which would certainly upgrade them. Obviously, Correa would cost a lot more than this even with regular appearances on the IL throughout the years.

The Mets and Astros have already made one trade this winter when they acquired Jake Marisnick for two prospects. Last winter the two squads made perhaps an even more impactful deal when J.D. Davis left the Lone Star State for the Empire one.

Those fans hoping for a big splash from Van Wagenen this winter will probably be disappointed. A deal for Mookie Betts would completely dry up the farm system and possibly weaken the major league roster in at least one area. The same sentiments could be said for Kris Bryant and Francisco Lindor.

This Mets offseason has been underwhelming thus far and much different from round one of Van Wagenen. By this time last year, Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz were with the team. Not long after, Jeurys Familia and Wilson Ramos were signed.

As far as Mets trade rumors are concerned, there’s not much positive coming out of the Winter Meetings. Perhaps boredom led to this discussion about Correa. Or maybe Van Wagenen truly is looking for an upgrade to his fantasy baseball team.
