Mets need to win a championship under “Stone Cold” Steve Cohen or buy trying
Billionaire “Stone Cold” Steve Cohen is expected to take over the New York Mets within the next five years. During his reign, the team must bring a parade back to Queens.
The Steve Cohen Era of New York Mets baseball has yet to begin. In the meantime, fans will impatiently wait for Stone Cold Steve Cohen to take over as the man in charge of the team in Flushing.
When there’s an ownership change in sports, the expectation is rarely at the level of this one. There’s such a difference between the Wilpons and Cohen. The man has pieces of art worth more than any player in Mets history. The team is going to win a championship under his reign, or buy trying.
There’s little doubt the Mets are going to look different when Cohen takes over majority ownership. You don’t buy a fancy new toy only to let it collect dust.

Cohen is a character who has lived a life many of us can only imagine.
On the television show Billions, the character played by Damien Lewis is heavily influenced by Cohen. Certainly eccentric with his tastes, the future owner of the Mets must do what fans have been begging for from the owners for years: spend money.
As a New York sports team, there’s no shortage of potential fans. Even with the challenge of sharing a city with the New York Yankees, there are millions of others who have chosen the Mets instead. The market is perfect to build on. With New Jersey and Connecticut not far away, there are even more opportunities to grow the fan base. The best way to do this is to win. In baseball, you win by spending money.
Baseball guarantees nothing and spending money hardly lands a team in the postseason. However, there’s no doubt with the Mets they would have benefitted more in 2019 with an owner willing to spend a little extra.
When Cohen does take over, fans should expect an organization that laughs in the face of the luxury tax. While we may not see the payroll go over the number every year, Cohen would be foolish to wait to make his big splashes.
I doubt he is a fool. You don’t get to be a billionaire by sitting back and waiting for anything.
Cohen’s first act as owner should be to show the rest of the league and the team’s fans how much he intends to turn the team around. We don’t yet know when this will happen. At this time, we can only speculate what’s in store.

Whenever he does become the new man in the power chair, the Flushing Faithful can finally breathe a sigh of relief. Cohen is going to spend money. The Mets will only then need to trust their baseball minds to pick the right players to use it on.
