The latest set of New York Mets rumors indicates the team is looking at the top free agent relievers in baseball. Who will they sign?
Anyone who saw an inning of relief from the New York Mets in 2018 knows this team needs bullpen help. Other than Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman on his good days, the relief corps was an utter disaster this past year. According to the latest Mets rumors, this may soon change.
Andy Martino of SNY reports the team is weighing out the possibility of adding high-end free agent relievers. The list includes Craig Kimbrel, Zach Britton, Adam Ottavino, Andrew Miller, and David Robertson.
Personally, Miller is the one name on this list I have no interest in. I like what he did for the Cleveland Indians. However, at his age and coming off a year where he struggled to stay healthy, I’m hesitant.

I suspect many of the Mets rumors this offseason will focus on the bullpen. There are plenty of men available on the open market and plenty more available through trade.
One name Martino didn’t mention in his piece was Cody Allen. The former Indians’ closer didn’t pitch well in 2018 but was one of the best closers in the game prior to the recent struggles. It seems as if many relievers suffered some sort of curse once Mickey Callaway left the Tribe after 2017. Even a guy like Bryan Shaw who now pitches for the Colorado Rockies saw his numbers inflate in a bad way. For him, a major culprit is Coors Field.
General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen has yet to paint a clear picture of what he plans to do this offseason. It seems as if his answer to every question reveals nothing. As I think a lot of people expected, he’s very diplomatic and holding his cards close to his chest.
The offseason is really just beginning and more Mets rumors should hit the internet in the coming days and weeks. While I believe Kimbrel is a pipe dream, the others mentioned by Martino are a realistic possibility.
In particular, Robertson seems like a very good better. He’s a bit older and in his second trip through free agency. The possibility to become the Mets closer should definitely intrigue him after spending time as a setup man for the New York Yankees.

For sure, adding bullpen pieces is a necessity for this team. Two high-end names are almost a requirement.
