New York Mets need to do something about Peter Alonso

The Mets have a lot to look forward to in Peter Alonso. But when are we going to see him?

Every day it’s starting to look like Peter Alonso will be the next big thing for the New York Mets. Maybe even bigger than Cody Bellinger and Rhys Hoskins.

He’s been doing it all, and he hasn’t slowed down one bit. As of August 12th, he’s been destroying every pitch that’s sent his way. For one, he already has 29 home runs. If he were to get called up and kept playing through September, he could easily finish the season with 35 home runs.

That number isn’t as surprising as the next one. He has 105 Runs Batted In. That leads all of baseball. No major league hitter or any other minor leaguer has more than Peter. The player who is next in line is J.D. Martinez, who has 104 RBI’s and then Khris Davis with just 93.

But why hasn’t he been called up yet? He deserves it doesn’t he? If it’s really a lost season, then the Mets have no reason not to let him play out the rest of the season in Queens.

If they really want to win in 2019, which the team said they do multiple times, then they don’t want Peter to have to go through the hassle of getting used to big league pitching at the start of the season.

Why have him make his debut next season and work on adjustments? If he starts out slow and doesn’t succeed right away, it would hurt the team’s chance of winning. It makes perfect sense to let him get a good chunk of playing time in 2018 so he can work everything out and get himself ready for a monster season.

The Mets have given a few excuses for why he hasn’t made his debut yet. They are all silly because if you wait until next season, other, more pressing issues and excuses would start to pop up.

I mean, I guess it would be cool if Peter didn’t get enough at-bats to lose rookie eligibility so he could have a huge rookie year next season, but the real concern is making sure that he’s ready.

Last season the Mets were in a similar spot at this point in the year. They entered August 13th with a 52-62 record and they called up Amed Rosario on August 1st and Dominic Smith on August 11th.

This year they are 49-66 and they have nothing to lose. He has to be called up either this month or during the first few days of September.

If they don’t call him up right away, the 2019 season is going to be a lot more difficult than some think.
