Mets fans are giving MLB reason to institute a pitch clock

There are a lot of great things happening at Citi Field this year. Every night you attend a game, you get to see the first place New York Mets! What more do you need?

Apparently, first place still isn’t enough entertainment for some fans. If Aelius Maximus Decimus Meridius showed up in the seventh inning stretch, extended his arms, and inquired with the Mets fans, “Are you not entertained?” he’d get a response he wasn’t looking for.

The wave is back at Citi Field on a near-nightly basis. A sporting tradition reserved for the dog days of summer when your team is playing meaningless games or limping through a blowout has somehow entered into the gates at Citi Field this season. Some fans aren’t too happy about it on Twitter. Gary Cohen isn’t excited about it either.

Is it possible for the Mets to DFA the wave?

As Cohen said in Monday’s game versus the Atlanta Braves, the only way to stop the wave might be for MLB to officially add in a pitch clock:

Ballpark events like this are tricky. Every night, it’s someone’s first game of their life. A lot of fans only ever get to see one game a year, too. Not every fan understands every aspect of the game. They are there to be entertained, not analyze Buck Showalter’s starting lineup.

This instance of the wave is interesting because it took place in the bottom of the fifth in a 2-1 game with the Mets at bat—and with the lead. It’s not exactly late enough into the night for fans to feel the need to do that slow squat upwards with their hands flailing; the act which when timed correctly looks like there’s a wave going around the entire ballpark.

Fans should get to enjoy themselves however they see fit as long as things remain civil. The difference between the wave and other ballpark activities, like doing embarrassingly doing the YMCA in front of 30,000 people on a Monday night, is that there’s something you paid some pretty money to see take place happening at the same time on the field. One wouldn’t go to the movie theater and start the wave to provide some entertainment. Maybe during one of the new Star Wars trilogy films, but nothing else.

How forgettable were those three films?

It’s early May which means the weather should heat up soon. When it comes, the wave tends to disappear except during absolutely boring games. If the wave is something you absolutely despise, that’s another reason for you to look forward to summer.

Next. The preseason Mets take that has gone cold. dark
