1) Nolan McLean
You don’t trade Nolan McLean in a year where he can be an answer to your roster needs. Just, no. There’s no argument to make here.
There isn’t another prospect Mets fans will scream about more loudly about a promotion than McLean. The team’s obvious need for bullpen help as well as room for a starter should have them considering him in the final two months.
Stearns has stated previously how he would prefer not to use any pitching prospects for a spot start. What about as a regular in the rotation or out of the bullpen? As many have pointed out, he regularly used some of the better young Milwaukee Brewers pitchers as relievers early in their careers.
Through 64.1 innings, McLean owns a 3.22 ERA for Syracuse. His strikeout rate of 9.9 K/9 might not leave anyone speechless. For McLean, his hype seems to be about the sum of all parts. He first caught everyone’s attention because of last year’s work as a two-way player. Rising on many prospect rankings and living up to the hype has helped make him the most untouchable minor leaguer.
It doesn’t matter if Coldplay invites him up on stage for a once in a lifetime moment to sing with Chris Martin (the singer, not veteran reliever). The Mets needed to hold onto him closely. There isn’t a trade deadline need or realistically available player right now worth dealing him away for.
What could make Nolan McLean expendable in the future: He hits the same wall Brandon Sproat and Blade Tidwell have slammed into.
