The New York Mets face a crucial decision this offseason regarding their first base position. With Pete Alonso hitting free agency, the team must weigh their options and determine the best path forward.

While retaining Alonso is undoubtedly the ideal scenario, the potential costs associated with such a move may force the Mets to explore alternative options, such as signing Christian Walker. We examine the feasibility of each player profile and determine the optimal choice for the Mets.

The Mets' case for signing Pete Alonso

Alonso has established himself as one of the most feared hitters in baseball. He is a powerhouse bat who consistently hits home runs and drives in runs. Since his debut in 2019, Alonso has been second in all MLB in home runs, only behind Aaron Judge, and first in RBIs.

Likewise, his energetic style of play, personality, and passion have made him a beloved figure among Mets fans. Likewise, being a homegrown star has created a greater bond with the organization, the fans, and the city of New York.

However, signing Alonso to a long-term deal will come at a significant cost, potentially limiting the team's ability to address other needs. As he's looking for a long-term contract the risk of injury and decline in performance increases.

After a formidable 2022 season, Alonso has encountered trouble getting on base, increasing his strikeout rate due to an increase in his swing at pitches outside the strike zone, which has hurt his overall offensive production by more than 20% in the last two seasons. Likewise, Alonso's defense at first base ranks second-worst in the league in terms of outs above average, tied with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and others.

Ultimately, the Mets' decision will depend on their long-term goals and financial constraints. If they prioritize retaining their star and are willing to invest heavily in him, Alonso is the clear choice.

The Mets' case for signing Christian Walker

While the allure of a high-profile signing may be tempting, Christian Walker presents a compelling case as a reliable and cost-effective option. The veteran first baseman enters free agency after posting a .251/.335/.468/.803 offensive line with 26 home runs and 84 RBIs in 479 at-bats.

Walker has proven to be a consistent offensive contributor, providing power and a solid on-base percentage. Unlike Alonso, a key aspect of Walker's profile is his defense. In terms of Outs Above Average, Walker ranked second among MLB first basemen only to Carlos Santana and prevented around 10 net runs according to Statcast.

Additionally, compared to other high-profile free agents like Alonso, Walker is a more affordable option in terms of commitment in years and money. Signing him would allow the Mets to allocate resources to other areas of need, such as pitching or bolstering their bullpen.

Meanwhile, Walker's performance has been inconsistent throughout his career. While he has had some impressive seasons, he has also experienced periods of significant decline. Likewise, his clearance of the strike zone has decreased and an increase in his strikeout percentage is observed in 2024 due to a decrease in his aggressiveness at the plate.

Also, as Walker enters his late 30s, the risk of decline becomes more evident. While he may still be productive for a few more years, relying on him as a mid-term solution could be a risky strategy.

While Walker may not possess the same star power as Alonso, his consistent performance, defensive versatility, and affordability make him a strong candidate to fill the Mets' first base. By signing Walker, the Mets can solidify their lineup and improve their chances of postseason success.

The Verdict

The decision will come whether the Mets will look to re-sign their homegrown slugger, Pete Alonso, or pursue a more budget friendly option in Christian Walker. Both players bring unique strengths and weaknesses, making it a tough choice for David Stearns.

Alonso offers immense potential and star power but his high price tag may limit the Mets' ability to address other needs. Walker, on the other hand, provides a more affordable and versatile option, but may not have the same offensive ceiling as Alonso.

The Mets' decision will have implications for the team's near future, whether they choose to go all in for Alonso or opt for a more conservative approach like Walker. Though given the Mets' aggressive pursuit of top talent, as evidenced by their bid for Juan Soto, retaining Alonso seems like the logical choice.

Although the risk of becoming a designated hitter in the short term is high, today's baseball lacks figures of consistent power like Alonso, and even more so knowing that he has been able to succeed in a market as demanding as that of the city of New York.

Likewise, his inconsistency at the plate should be improved with the arrival of new faces to the team, both externally and internally that will lighten a load of pressure that was added this past season by the need to produce before free agency. Signing Alonso is a no-brainer for the Mets who should not leave Pete's history with the team in that glorious home run against Devin Williams in the 2024 division series but rather we can enjoy his timely power throughout the following seasons.
