Gregory Soto has been a massive letdown after a hot start
Gregory Soto was one of the Mets’ biggest pick-ups at the trade deadline. At the time, they needed a left-hander they could call upon in higher leverage, and Soto was having a solid year with the Baltimore Orioles. At the time, Soto appeared to be a good addition to the bullpen. He had a 3.96 ERA, 3.33 FIP, and 1.29 WHIP in 36.1 IP with the O’s. He also struck out a healthy amount of opponents, with a 27.5% K%, while only allowing two home runs. The only downside was his 11.3% walk rate.
Soto’s first month with the Mets was also great. He pitched 12.2 innings through the end of August, while only allowing two earned runs. He also got 13 batters to go down on strikes, and only handed out four free passes. While the left-hander may have given up 13 hits, none left the park. However, his month of September is one of the many reasons for the Mets’ late-season collapse.
Soto’s last 10.1 innings have seen him allow a whopping ten earned runs. He is still racking up strikeouts at a decent rate, with 12, and has only allowed two walks. But he is now giving up more hits and more home runs. 15 batters have gotten a base knock off of Soto since the start of September, with two leaving the ballpark.
Soto’s most recent meltdown, where he allowed two earned runs against the Marlins on the 26th, is the (upsetting) cherry on top of his performance this month. He has had a tremendous downward spiral after getting off to a scorching hot start with the Mets. Now, Mets fans are probably counting down the days when he hits free agency.
