5. Wilson Ramos and Travis d’Arnaud would handle the catching duties

Over the past few seasons, I have said that Travis d’Arnaud is a solid back-up catcher but should never be the Mets’ primary catcher. He is always hurt and even when he is healthy, his offensive production is minimal.

When the Mets signed the veteran Wilson Ramos during this past offseason, I thought the team would finally be set at the catching position: Ramos would start and d’Arnaud would be his back-up. This has proven to not be the case.

After going 2-for-23, d’Arnaud was designated for assignment by the Mets at the end of April. Tomas Nido is now Ramos’ back-up catcher and even though he is not particularly good, especially offensively-speaking, he is, at least, defensively a step-up from d’Arnaud.

The Mets’ starting pitchers throw hard and their pitches are scattered so they need catchers who will do a good job behind the plate. There was no longer any incentive for the Mets to keep him around because he has been horrible on offense and because of the potential risk of injury.

One can hope that Nido will be able to get his bat going as the season progresses, even though he is a back-up.

It is still quite early, but some predictions we made before the season began are already wrong. However, because it is still early, much can change. The rotation can still improve, Familia can excel, Alonso can struggle, etc. Following our predictions as the season progresses should be interesting. Hopefully the good proves to be good and the bad does not happen.
