#3 Hechavarria offers more defensive options than Smith

As Smith is primarily a first baseman, he is limited as a defensive player, so with Alonso rightfully starting almost every game at first base, Smith does not have much value outside of being a pinch hitter if the Mets do not want to take Alonso out of the game.

Adeiny Hechavarria, on the other hand, offers more versatility as a defensive player, as he has primarily been a shortstop throughout his career, as well as logging games at second base and third base.

The Mets do not have much need for depth at first base, as outside of Smith, Todd Frazier, JD Davis and Robinson Cano each have experience playing first base in the majors and are capable of playing there in the event that Alonso was unavailable to play.

Hechavarria, however, would provide the Mets depth at shortstop, which the team is in need of, as their only other shortstop on the major league roster is Amed Rosario, who is the current starter.

His ability to play shortstop would give the Mets the option to give Rosario more days off in the lineup to keep him well rested, as well as a defensive alternative for potential double switches late in games.
