Worst Case Scenario

The worst case scenario for Gsellman is fairly obvious. As we’ve seen with several Mets pitchers in recent years, what if he drops off the planet completely?

I don’t mean to say the earth is flat and he’s about to sail off the edge. Figuratively, I mean we see him become a disaster in relief.

Gsellman’s ERA went up and down throughout 2018. In a worst case scenario, it won’t go down too much. Home runs will kill him, walks will cause extra pain, and we’ll see what we believed was a promising career ahead turn into an ugly one.

Gsellman cannot become the team’s mop-up man. The Mets have plenty of options for that role.

With a little less responsibility in the coming year, we need to hope Gsellman keeps his foot on the gas. He has moved down the depth chart of the relief corps. By year’s end, we could see others pass him, too.

The Mets have missed on many relief pitchers. All of those trade deadline deals they’ve made in recent years have brought back few talented arms. Gsellman, one of the few homegrown talents who has experienced success, is a guy they should be able to count on for the next few years.

In Gsellman’s worst case scenario timeline, he trends backward and becomes a forgotten piece of the franchise’s future. He has the grit to pitch well in Major League Baseball. It’s up to him to continue his growth and progress this season.
