Which New York Mets player will have a breakout campaign in 2019?

In what was, unfortunately, a very disappointing 2018 season, there were a few bright spots on the New York Mets last year in the form of players such as Brandon Nimmo and Zack Wheeler having career years and helping to make the fan base more excited as we anticipate the 2019 campaign.

While these two were not rookies last season, having both spent time in the big leagues before, it was the first year that they performed at a high enough level to put themselves on the rest of the league’s radar.

After a few short stints in New York the previous two seasons, Nimmo’s breakout finally came in 2018, where he established himself as the Mets leadoff hitter and one of their starting outfielders going forward, as he finished the year with the fourth highest OBP in the majors.

Wheeler was a bit of a different case. After enjoying success in his first full year in the majors back in 2014, but after missing both the 2015 and 2016 season while recovering from Tommy John Surgery, and struggling in his 2017 return, many fans were worried that he would fail to live up to his potential.

In 2018 however, Wheeler had the breakout season Mets fans were hoping for. After struggling earlier in the year, Wheeler rebounded and pitched at an elite level in the second half of the season, including posting a 1.13 ERA in the month of August.

He finished the year with a career-low 3.31 ERA in 29 starts and proved that despite his previous injuries, he is still capable performing a high level and will enter this season as the Mets’ number 3 starter.

Like both of those two, the Mets look to enter the 2019 season with a few young players with the potential to be impact performers but have yet to produce at a major league level.

While many players currently are locks for Opening Day, there are still a few openings left on the team, and room for young players, both returning from last season and debuting, to potentially make an impact and have a breakout season next year.

These four men have a shot to be this year’s breakout star.
