Worst Case Scenario

A repeat of what we saw from Smith in 2017 and 2018 is definitely in the neighborhood of the worst case scenario. By just continuing down this same path, I have to believe his time as a big leaguer may be limited in the future.

Things can obviously go much worse. For starters, maybe he begins the year in the minor leagues and never climbs out of it. It’s very possible with the way the roster looks.

The Mets aren’t about to designated Smith for assignment. Until he gets to arbitration eligibility and/or loses his minor league options, they can toy with which uniform he wears.

Smith will see time in Syracuse in 2019, whether it’s brief or for much longer. It would take a drastic change to the projected 25-man roster for him to squeeze anywhere on the bench. We’ve seen bold moves from this organization already this winter. I can’t imagine them keeping the bench as is.

Prepared to embark on his third year with time in the big leagues, the worst we can expect from Smith is a very limited attendance. He needs big league at-bats. Without them, he’ll remain a regular slumper.

Practice makes perfect, but nobody is. However, big league players can be pretty darn good if given the chance. For Smith, his worst case scenario is all about whether or not he gets his. I tend to believe he won’t.
