There may be a new general manager in Flushing as all New York Mets rumors suggest Brodie Van Wagenen has won the job.

The New York Mets rumors about the general manager search all point in one direction. They are holding in the worst-kept secret in sports news right now. Since they cannot announce the news until after the World Series or on an off-day, we won’t know 100% that they’ve found their new general manager.

Rather than go the analytical route with Chaim Bloom, Mets rumors have all stated that they will name Brodie Van Wagenen the next general manager.

Mets fans may know Van Wagenen as the guy who represents Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard, Todd Frazier, and others on the roster. The CAA agent clearly has a close relationship with the Wilpons, likely giving him an edge over other candidates this offseason.

There are pros and cons with Van Wagenen as there would be with any hire. Of course, we don’t really know what they truly are until he becomes the general manager. He’s inexperienced in this role. For all we know, he’s the next big thing.

It is a little disappointing to see the Mets pass on Bloom who many believe fits well in the new approach toward building a baseball team. Considering he worked for the surprisingly productive Tampa Bay Rays in 2018, it’s fair to assume he has the ability to make the best out of a bad situation. Nobody expected the Rays to finish with 90 wins in a year where they traded Chris Archer.

Early next week, we should hear an official announcement. Van Wagenen can say sayonara to his gig as an agent and begin the next chapter in his life as the general manager of the Mets.

Thankfully, the organization made this decision ahead of the first day of free agency. Van Wagenen should have enough time to at least put together a plan for the 2019 team and discuss things with the real general manager, Jeff Wilpon.
