Worst Case Scenario
As the probable case for all players, the worst case scenario for Steven Matz would be if he missed most or all of the season with an arm injury. He’s had his fair share of injuries in the past and they have affected his ability to get in a groove.
Pitchers need to get on a regular schedule to have any sort of success it seems. We saw that with Jason Vargas this year. He couldn’t stay on the field, kept getting skipped, and he couldn’t get going, but once he got on regular rest he got in a groove.
Matz saw some trouble in 2017 when he tried to pitch through injury and put up terrible numbers. He saw a lot of growth and improvement in being able to pitch through minor injuries like bone spurs.
Matz could also find himself in the bullpen if things don’t pan out for him as a starter. After all, it never hurts to have an extra lefty in the bullpen, but he would prefer to remain in the rotation. Fans would hate to see the team break up the core of Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Zack Wheeler and Steven Matz.
The last thing we’d want to see is a minor league stint for Matz, it has yet to reach that level and hopefully will never come to that. If Corey Oswalt shows major improvement or Justin Dunn seems ready, somebody is going to have to go, and if Matz isn’t performing then it would be time to give someone else a shot.
