Chris Flexen

The Nickname: Big Baby (2017 Players Weekend, courtesy of bullpen catcher Dave Racaniello, who goes by Rac)

The Review: Chris Flexen had a disastrous season in 2018. As a starter he gave up three extra-base hits in 3.0 IP; as a reliever, he gave up four extra-base hits in 3.1 IPS. That kind of consistency is impressive, but not the slightest bit helpful.

The Pitching stats: (see starter report card for his work as a starter)

  • G 3
  • IP 3.1
  • ERA 10.80
  • FIP 9.16
  • xFIP 7.24
  • K% 4.6
  • BB% 13.6
  • K-BB% -9.1 (this won’t work)
  • HR/9 2.70
  • HR/FB 25.0
  • BABIP .471
  • WHIP 3.60
  • GB% 50.0
  • WAR -0.3 (combined starter and reliever)

The Grade: F (needs some more time in prep school, and maybe a Plan B)

Corey Oswalt

The Nickname: Oz (2018 Players Weekend)

The Review: Corey Oswalt is 25 and serves as starting and relieving depth. He showed that he is probably more suited to start, as his relief stats are much worse. I would like to see him in Syracuse as starting depth, rather than in the bullpen in 2019.

The Pitching stats: (relief only, please see starter report card for work as a starter)

  • G 5
  • IP 9.1
  • ERA 12.54
  • FIP 5.95
  • xFIP 5.11
  • K% 13.3
  • BB%  6.7
  • K-BB% 6.7
  • HR/9 1.9
  • HR/FB 18.2 (same as starter)
  • BABIP .333
  • WHIP 1.71
  • GB% 40.0
  • WAR  -0.4 (combined starter and reliever)

The Grade: Incomplete

Notes: As I said in the starter report card, Oswalt may be suited to be an opener. His best situational splits are the first time through the order as a starter.

PJ Conlon

The Review: PJ Conlon is a 24-year-old left-hander and he’s from Northern Ireland, UK. He was designated for assignment for the Mets in one of their many moves to protect Jose Reyes‘ roster spot. The bad news is that the Dodgers claimed him, and the good news is that the Mets reclaimed him.

The Pitching stats: (reliever only) (please see starter report card for starting stats)

  • G 1
  • IP 2.0
  • ERA 0.00
  • FIP 0.16
  • xFIP 0.99
  • WHIP 1.50
  • K% 37.5
  • BB% 0.0
  • K-BB% 37.5
  • BABIP .600

The Grade: Incomplete
