The Mets got 22 starts from people other than deGrom, Syndergaard, Wheeler, Matz, Harvey, and Vargas. Here they are in order of starts.

Corey Oswalt

The Nicknames: Oz, Not Roy Oswalt, CRO (Chief Replacement Officer)

The Review: When do you have enough starting pitching? When you don’t have to ask Corey Oswalt to start 12 times before he’s ready.

He wasn’t terrible, but he didn’t help much, and he was just one of a short parade of unexpected starters, which seems to happen every year.

The Pitching stats:

  • G  17
  • GS  12
  • IP   64.2
    • starter only 56.1
  • ERA  5.85
    • starter only 4.72
  • FIP  5.70
  • WHIP  1.38
  • K/9  6.26
  • BB/9  2.78
  • HR/9  1.95
  • GB%  42.3
  • WAR  -0.4

The Grade: D+ (the plus is being more effective as a starter than Jason Vargas)

Notes: Oswalt could become an effective Opener. His best stats are the first time through the order as a starter, with a 2.70 ERA and a .280 OBP. He is not nearly as effective the first time through the order as a reliever for some reason with a .457 OBP in a 6.1 inning sample.

Seth Lugo (the starter version)

The Review: Seth Lugo filled in decently as a spot starter, in between dominant multi-inning relief outings.

Pitching stats as starter only

  • GS  5
  • IP   23
  • ERA  3.91
  • FIP  3.86
  • WHIP  1.30
  • K/9  10.57
  • BB/9  2.35
  • HR/9  1.57
  • GB%  44.1

The Grade: C+ (plus for his willingness and ability to switch to the bullpen)
