2010s – 2018 Mets

I’m writing this a little prematurely, but will anything end up as bad as the 2018 Mets? The 2017 team offered plenty of bad games. I still think the most recent team is worse.

Jacob deGrom‘s Cy Young worthy season has been wasted due to a lack of offense. The team has never been able to figure out how to score runs for him. Even when others are on the mound, the bats tend to go silent.

What makes this year especially bad is all of the off-the-field problems. The season-ending surgery for Yoenis Cespedes has been the biggest blow. He’ll end 2018 with only 38 games played. There’s a guarantee he will most a large chunk of 2019 as well.

You name a member of the 2018 Mets and I can name a problem with them. Whether they’ve gotten hurt or underperformed, it has been a messy campaign.

After this year ends, there’s only one more opportunity to compete for the worst team of this decade. The 2019 season may challenge for the title. There are enough bad contracts on the books to prevent them from turning things around quickly. Another year of Mickey Callaway as the manager probably won’t help either.

The story of the 2018 season is not yet complete. I have no doubt in my mind, though, that it will at worst rank as the second worst season of the decade.
