Even before the Cleveland Indians lost Danny Salazar, the Mets and Indians were a match in potential trades. You may have heard rumbles about the Indians targeting Manny Machado. They could also use another starting pitcher, too.
After coming so close to winning it all in 2016, it’s important the Indians do whatever they can to end their championship drought this season. The window is slowly closing as they face a heavy free agent class after this year. By adding Wheeler, they at least secure one spot in the rotation.
The Indians are a match with the Mets even beyond Wheeler. Perhaps a deal which also includes Familia could help them.
The one prospect the Mets need to get in any major deal with the Indians is Francisco Mejia. The top catching prospect in baseball looks like a future star. With Yan Gomes behind the plate and signed through 2021, there may not be any room for the young backstop to play.
Wheeler is no stranger to taking a backseat to aces. It’s what he has always done while in New York. If he were to join the Indians, Wheeler would supplement a rotation led by Corey Kluber. The role would be the same and only the city and nickname would change.
