Right now, the plan is to have Jacob deGrom start tomorrow against the Phillies. If history is any indication, that’s really good news for the pitcher.

Historically, Jacob deGrom has been fantastic when pitching Sunday day games. Very little stopped him and the New York Mets from having great outings on such days.

Entering the 2018 season, he started 15 Sunday games and all but a few have been lights out. He’s recorded a quality start 11 times and threw ten or more strikeouts four times.

In each of his first five Sunday starts, deGrom went at least six innings and gave up two or fewer runs.

One of his best starts ever, if not his best, also came on a Sunday. Ironically it was also against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.

On July 17th, 2016, deGrom pitched the first and only complete game shutout of his career. It wasn’t just any shutout either as he gave up just one hit and one walk. He even scored a run that day.

All in all, deGrom has posted a 2.37 ERA combined between all 15 Sunday games. deGrom struck out a lot of hitters too. 109 over 95 innings to be exact. That’s good for a 10.32 K/9 rate.

In each of his first three seasons, deGrom posted a K/9 rate below 10, and in 2017, the year he racked up 239 strikeouts, his rate stood at 10.7.

In each of his last two Sunday starts, deGrom recorded ten or more strikeouts, while going just six innings.

If you are a fan of seeing deGrom’s incredible stretches, then it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that he could continue his amazing Sunday stretch tomorrow.

Regardless of how well deGrom performs tomorrow, the important thing is that he seems healthy. It’s really cool to see all the amazing streaks he can go on. However, just having a solid deGrom who can pitch at all is a huge bright spot for the Mets right now.
