Role and Contract Status for 2018

It remains unclear what the Mets plans are for Smith heading into the 2018 season. General Manager Sandy Alderson indicated at the onset of the offseason that Smith didn’t win the first base job in September. The team has been connected to a few different free agent first basemen. It is very possible that the team could aquire a stop gap at the position and send Smith down to Triple A for more seasoning. They could also have Smith on the long end of a platoon and aquire a right handed hitting first baseman to split time.

Next: The case for Andrew Cashner

There were some concerning things that happened to Smith this past season but it’s still important to remember he is only 22 years old. It is certainley a real possibility that he can show the promise that he did in the minor leagues and become a big part of the teams chances to contend in 2018.
