Areas for Improvment

There are quite a bit of areas for Smith to improve upon, one of the more important ones that takes place off of the field. Much has been made about Smiths conditioning. The player has acknowledged that it is something that he has always dealt with and to his credit he is off to a great start this offseason.

It is also imperative that Smith improve on his defense. The team appears to be focusing on improving it’s defense as a whole for next season and if Smith can get back to the reputation he  coming up as a strong defensive player, that would improve the infeild defense greatly.

Lastly, the 50% groundball rate that Smith ran last year must drop. Smith had a BABIP of .218, which is crazy low. Hitting a ground ball 50% of the time is a huge reason why. Improving on getting more balls in the air and hitting more line drives will in turn get more balls to find grass and not fielders gloves. The good news for him is that it will be very very difficult to repeat a BABIP that low especially for a player with Smiths talent.
