Role in 2018 and contract status
The Mets have already picked up Cabrera’s option for 2018. I would say unless he has an absolutely fantastic season, I can’t seem them extending a contract beyond that. At least I would like to think so. Again there would be a lot of factors at play here.

If the Mets were to pass on Cabrera beyond 2018, what does the hot corner look like from there? Do they pick up another third baseman in a trade? Does Flores step up and take the role there? Perhaps David Wright finally makes his glorious return and he is better than ever. But for the time being, aside from a few off days, Cabrera is most likely going to be that fixture at third.
