Role for 2018 and contract status

NEW YORK, NY – SEPTEMBER 25: Outfielders Brandon Nimmo

Unless Nimmo is traded in the next few years, he should be around for awhile. He won’t be arbitration eligible until 2020, and then a free agent in 2023. Do I foresee the Mets dealing him before then? It’s honestly hard to say the way this organization makes moves. Personally, I’d like Nimmo to stay in New York. Far too often we deal away players that end up becoming great down the line. I’d like to at least see how Nimmo’s developed by the time 2020 rolls around and then decide from there.

As for his role next season, he’ll most likely be platooning somewhere in the outfield. Conforto, Cespedes, and Lagares will probably take on the majority of the time out there. And while I don’t think Lagares is better at the plate than Nimmo, it’s all about that gold glove defense. The Mets are certainly in no position to pass up any additional defense.
