After last season, Mets manager Terry Collins indicated that 2017 was likely to be his last season. But on Friday, FanRag Sports’ Jon Heyman reported that Collins is now open to a return in 2018.

At 68, Collins is the oldest current manager in baseball and he mentioned at the end of the 2016 season that he was starting to feel the wear and tear of the job, specifically noting the late-night travel as a struggle.

The 2015 Sporting News NL Manager of the Year has managed the most games in Mets history at 1,085 and is only 63 wins away from breaking Davey Johnson‘s record for the most wins as a manger in the history of the franchise. His record with the Mets is 533-552 and his career record is 977-986.

Not a lot has gone right for the Mets in 2017, but that shouldn’t fall on Collins’ shoulders.

Coming into the season, the team planned on having a rotation of Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, and Zack Wheeler with Robert Gsellman and Seth Lugo as insurance policies. Every one of those pitchers has missed significant time due to injury other than deGrom.

At this point in the season, Chris Flexen and Rafael Montero are regulars in the starting rotation. That’s just the beginning of how bad the injuries have been this season.

The team’s captain hasn’t played a game this season either and Yoenis Cespedes has missed a lot of time as well. Collins also hasn’t had the luxury of having his All-Star closer Jeurys Familia for most of the season.

The list of injuries for the 2017 Mets goes on and on.

Collins is in the last year of a two-year deal that he signed after 2015, right after leading the Mets to their first World Series appearance since 2000. He led the team back to the postseason just one year later, despite being under. 500 and 5.5 games out of a playoff spot with just 40 games to go.

If Collins wants to return for one last run in 2018, Sandy Alderson should bring him back. The team has the talent to compete in 2018 again if it stays relatively healthy, and a managerial change could hurt the team’s chances. Collins already knows the players on this team and they are comfortable playing for him.
