The Amazin’s have liked players from Stanford University early on in the draft

The Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft’s fifth round has yielded another pick for our favorite team. This time, the club is taking a shot with another Stanford Baseball guy with the 157th pick overall in outfielder Matt Winaker from Alamo, California.

The 21-year-old junior fields and bats from the left side like his teammate Quinn Brodey who the Mets took in the third round earlier today. Winaker doesn’t have as much pop as other players in this draft, but he does have great plate discipline.

In his latest season at Stanford, Winaker actually had more walks (42) than strikeouts (36). This led to him having an impressive .432 OBP while batting .308 overall. His nine home runs in 2017 were the most he’s hit in his college career. Scouts are expecting him to develop more power as a pro, but don’t expect him to put up his home run totals in general.

In Stanford, Winaker batted leadoff because of how tough of an out he was. The organization could look to keep him in that role going forward to make him into a proficient leadoff hitter — something New York has lacked severely at times over the past few seasons.

In case the outfield is too crowded, Winaker also has some experience at first base. As a lefty, he is uniquely positioned to play that corner infield spot, so look for him to also possibly get some playing time there.
