With the news coming earlier in the day that the Mets ace Noah Syndergaard would be going on the disabled with a tear in his right lat, the club needed to make a corresponding move to fill up the roster.

And the decision is to bring an extra bullpen arm up until at least Friday. For now, rookie Paul Sewald will be coming back to Queens and helping out a depleted pen in a series that’s still pretty important for the Mets in Atlanta.

More from New York Mets News

Sewald was up earlier in the year to help out again, but it wasn’t a great couple of the games for the newcomer, to say the least. He’s pitched only 1 1/3 innings and giving up four hits, two earned runs, and allowed a walk without striking anyone out. Hopefully his second go-around with the team will be better.

The 26-year-old righty has had some success in the minors. Last season in Las Vegas, Sewald posted a 10.96 K/9 ratio and a 2.88 BB/9 ratio in 65 2/3 innings. This season in Triple-A, he’s struck out 12 batters in 8 2/3 innings while surrendering only seven hits. If he can translate that success to the big leagues, he could be seeing more time up here later on in the season.

For now though, he’ll be here as a temporary replacement. Rafael Montero is slated to start on Friday agains the Miami Marlins, so the logical move would be to send down the guy that replaced the injured Syndergaard then.
