Mets call up Sean Gilmartin, option T.J. Rivera

Mets call up Gilmartin for bullpen depth a day after winning a 16-inning game against Miami
The New York Mets made what figures to be a temporary move, calling up Sean Gilmartin ahead of Friday’s game against Miami. In a corresponding move, T.J. Rivera was sent down to AAA Las Vegas. The Mets are coming off a 16-inning marathon and are thin in bullpen availability.
Terry Collins has already stated that Josh Smoker, Addison Reed, and Hansel Robles are all unavailable for the game. That leaves Fernando Salas, Rafael Montero, Jerry Blevins, and Josh Edgin in the pen. Salas and Blevins have each pitched on Wednesday and Thursday. If Blevins is used tonight, it would be the fourth time in five days. The pitch counts haven’t been high though. Blevins has thrown 34 pitches this week and 17 in the last two days.
Gilmartin’s turn in the rotation would have come up on Friday for Las Vegas against Fresno. In his season debut, Gilmartin pitched 3.1 innings and allowed three runs in a 7-2 loss to El Paso on April 9. He allowed one walk and struck out five.
Noah Syndergaard gets the ball for the Mets and the task is on him to eat up at least six innings. The same goes on the other side for Marlins starter, Edinson Volquez. Through two starts this season, Syndergaard has shown how he emerged as the ace of a talented Mets staff. He’s thrown 13 innings and registered 16 strikeouts to no walks.
The Mets’ bullpen as a unit has been worked early. Their 43.1 innings collectively is the most in the Majors and their bullpen ERA (2.91) ranks 11th. If Gilmartin is needed (which will be the case if Syndergaard gets chased early or the Mets go to extras again), the hope is that he can deliver at least three quality innings.

The Mets put a five-game winning streak on the line, which has already produced its share of drama. Three of those wins have come by a one-run margin.
