Neil Walker has been the lone bright spot offensively of late through the recent Mets struggles.

Through the last 19 games Walker’s hitting .455 with 6 home runs and 14 RBIs while the Mets sunk back to .500 before last night’s game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.  As the only hot bat in the lineup, news of him being scratched last night due to back spasms was something the Mets did not want to hear with the potential of falling below .500.

This worry was squashed as the Mets finally hit the Diamondbacks’ brutal rotation to score 7 and win 7-5. Included in this was a Noah Syndergaard home run and T.J. Rivera going 4-4 after replacing Walker in the lineup.  For one night the Mets were able to get by without Walker.

Assuming his back is a minor issue, Walker is bound to leave for the birth of his first child any day now. With all the struggles of the Mets offense, which hasn’t been helped by injuries, anytime missed by Walker would be a huge blow to the team.

Not that child births can be totally pinpointed to an exact day but if it doesn’t happen until the weekend the loss will appear to be mitigated as Yoenis Cespedes and Asdrubal Cabrera are close to returning to the lineup. Cespedes is planning to return on Friday, and Cabrera will be back by the weekend.

The Mets have been greatly frustrating to watch – just ask my wife and dog.

In 14 games since Cabrera has gone on the DL the Mets have gone 5-9, while with Cespedes on the DL they have gone 4-7. This has included 8 games with the Padres and Diamondbacks who are a combined 99-140. This is with a red hot Walker, if not for this unbelievable run he has been on, the Mets would be in even worse shape.

Walker was in a huge slump before this recent hot streak, which without, the Mets would be completely dead and buried.  For a season that has been filled with plenty of frustration and bad luck, this may finally be some good luck for Mets to get Cespedes and Cabrera back while Walker is gone for a few days on paternity leave.

Next: Mets upgrades will come from within the team

Once Walker comes back from leave hopefully this turn of fortune will carry through the rest of the year. We could only hope!

An early congratulations to Neil and his wife Niki on the impending birth of their baby girl!
