Dillon Gee has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Las Vegas, the Mets announced on Tuesday.

Gee was designated for assignment last week, and Sandy Alderson intimated at the time that the club would either trade Gee or send him to Triple-A Las Vegas once he cleared waivers.

Gee, who is arbitration eligible after the season, is owed slightly less than $3 million for the remainder of this season.

Before being designated for assignment, Gee had been moved to the bullpen but was then called upon to make a spot-start. During that start, Gee allowed eight runs on 11 hits in 3.2 innings pitched.

Overall this season, Gee has posted a 5.90 ERA to go along with a 1.66 WHIP and a career-low 5.67 K/9 rate in 39.2 innings pitched.

Thoughts:

The plan with Gee will almost certainly be for him to enter the starting rotation for Triple-A Las Vegas, where he’ll serve as rotation insurance for the major league club for the time being.

The fact that Gee went unclaimed after being placed on waivers shows that he has close to zero value. There are lots of teams in need of starting pitching reinforcements, and the fact that none of them were willing to take a chance on Gee — without having to part with anything in return — speaks volumes.

Perhaps the Mets will still be able to find someone to deal Gee to, but it’s something they have been unable to do since the winter.

With Gee still here and with Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard, and Steven Matz all on innings limits, it’s fair to wonder if Gee will be used later on this season to soak up some innings while the other starting pitchers are rested with their innings limits in mind.

There’s also a chance the Mets will call Gee up and insert him in the pen as a long man, but if that’s a role they saw him excelling at, they wouldn’t have designated him for assignment in the first place.
