Wednesday, June 17

Jon Niese (3-6, 4.24 ERA) vs. Drew Hutchinson (5-1, 5.75 ERA)

Jon Niese, the southpaw veteran threw his best outing in over a month, going seven innings, allowing two earned runs off five hits, in a no-decision against the San Francisco Giants. Niese has been a punching bag of criticism among fans and beat writers for most of the season and finally responding with a solid outing.

Niese is hoping to pick up a victory against the Blue Jays, but it will not be an easy objective. He faced the Blue Jays once and racked up a loss, allowing eight earned runs in only three innings of work.

On May 25, Drew Hutchinson went nine innings en route to a complete game shutout against the Chicago White Sox. On June 12, Hutchinson went two and 1/3 innings versus the Boston Red Sox and allowed eight earned runs off nine hits.

That’s exactly how Hutchinson’s season been. He’s shown flashes of lights out stuff, but then will have mental lapses that causes him to give up run after run in an outing. He’ll face the Mets for the first time in his career on Wednesday.
