Mets Game Recap: Dilson Herrera and Jacob deGrom lead Mets in 5-1 victory over Orioles

The Mets and Orioles played Game Two of their mini 2-game series Wednesday. Jacob deGrom climbed the hill for the Mets, and was opposed by Baltimore’s Ubaldo Jimenez.
Dilson Herrera enjoyed a break out game at the plate, while deGrom was stellar through 7 innings of work.
With a 5-1 victory, the Mets completed a sweep over the Baltimore Orioles, and improved their record to an 18-10 mark.
Game Recap:
The Mets opened the scoring in the 2nd inning. Michael Cuddyer led-off with a walk. With 2-outs, Kevin Plawecki drew the second walk issued by Jimenez. Dilson Herrera then drove in the first run of the game with a single to center.
- Through 3 innings pitched, Jacob deGrom threw 47 pitches, with 35 (74%) going for strikes. He allowed no runs on 2 hits, issued no walks, and fanned 5 batters.
Curtis Granderson led-off the bottom of the 3rd with a home run (his second of the season) to right field.
The Mets manufactured another run in the 4th. With 1-out, Kevin Plawecki singled to left. Herrera then flared a single into center field. Jacob deGrom helped his own cause with a base hit to load the bases. Granderson followed with a sac-fly to left that scored Plawecki from third base.

Jacob pitched out of trouble in the 5th. With 1-out, deGrom hit shortstop Everth Cabrera with a pitch. Pinch hitting for Ubaldo Jimenez, Travis Snider singled. Right fielder Alejandro De Aza then bounced into a fielder’s choice. With 2-outs, second baseman Jimmy Paredes singled to score Snider. Jacob then walked the next batter, but struck out Chris Davis for the third time in the game to minimize Baltimore’s threat.
- Jacob deGrom pitched 7 complete innings. He exited on the winning side of a 5-1 game, having thrown a season high 105 pitches, with 72 (69%) going for strikes. He allowed one earned run on 6 hits and one walk, fanned a season high 9 batters, and lowered his ERA from 3.34 to a 2.95 mark.
Carlos Torres entered the game in the 8th in relief of deGrom.
Alex Torres entered the game in the 9th in relief of Carlos Torres. With 1-out and a runner on first, Terry Collins then summoned Jeurys Familia from the bullpen, whom fanned two batters to end the game, and secured Jacob deGrom‘s third victory of the season.

Highlights:

- Jacob deGrom rebounded quite nicely after suffering through a pair of mortal outings, in which he failed to pitch through the 6th inning. This evening, he tied for his longest outing in 6 starts this season, evened his record at 3-3, and lowered his ERA to below three.
- The Washington Nationals defeated the Miami Marlins Wednesday night, and so the Mets maintain their 4-game lead over the Nationals in the N.L. East standings.
