Sam Maxwell, Staff Writer:

This one’s a bit of a stretch for me, since who knows the hypotheticals of whether they would have signed here, but I would have rather Jonny Gomes than John Mayberry, Jr.

Yes, Gomes is on the decline (and was never overall very good to begin with) but he’s not only got playoff pedigree, he’s got a ring, and I would have appreciated having someone in the clubhouse who’s been there, done that. And he’s known to catch fire at the perfectly right times.

Mayberry is a bench player certainly more in his prime, but Gomes and his camaraderie was something I had wanted the Mets to bring in.
