Mets sign catcher Johnny Monell to minor league deal

The Mets have announced the signing of 28-year-old catcher Johnny Monell to a minor league deal with an invite to major league Spring Training.
Monell, who hits lefty and throws righty, hit .238 with 4 home runs and 24 RBI in 68 games in 2014 split between the Triple-A affiliates of the Dodgers and Orioles.
Monell’s only big league appearance came during eight games with the Giants in 2013.
Thoughts:
The signing of Monell is a minor league depth move, and barring something unforeseen happening, it’s likely that Monell will serve as a backup to Kevin Plawecki at Triple-A Las Vegas in 2015.
At the big league level, the Mets will have Travis d’Arnaud with Anthony Recker serving as his backup. If one of them goes down with an injury, the likelihood is that Plawecki will be called up.
