Matt Harvey seems to have gotten over the fact that he won’t be returning to action in 2014. Now, his eye is on Opening Day of 2015.

During an appearance on WFAN on Thursday morning, Harvey said:

"I’m looking ahead to April 6 and counting the Washington Nationals as a ‘W.’"

When told of Harvey’s confident boast, Mets manager Terry Collins said that “Matt Harvey backs up what he says” and that he liked Harvey’s comments “a lot.”

Harvey, 25, is approaching the 12-month anniversary of his Tommy John surgery.

Harvey proclaimed himself ahead of schedule numerous times during the rehab process, but the Mets slowed him down out of an abundance of caution.

He’s set to throw a few more bullpen sessions before being shut down for the winter.

Before his injury in 2013, Harvey posted a 2.27 ERA and 0.93 ERA in 178.1 innings pitched over 26 games started.

Thoughts:

With the return of Matt Harvey, the Mets will be getting two things: a pitcher who is one of the best in baseball, and a competitor who has a chance to positively impact the feeling in the dugout and clubhouse on days he doesn’t pitch.

When Matt Harvey burst onto the scene in 2012 and raised his game to another level in 2013, the Mets had something they hadn’t had in years. Every time Harvey pitched, the Mets were a must-see event.

When the 2015 season kicks off, that must-see event will hopefully be back at full force.
