Mets may place Vic Black on DL, activate Daisuke Matsuzaka

By Danny Abriano

It was reported on Wednesday that Vic Black hoped to pitch through the slight herniated disk he was diagnosed with, but the Mets may be planning to place Black on the disabled list and replace him on the roster with Daisuke Matsuzaka.

Matsuzaka, 33, has been on the disabled list since late-July with elbow inflammation.

Black, 26, has missed the last two games due to a neck issue, and an MRI that came back Wednesday revealed the herniated disk. The issue is viewed as minor and Black hoped to be able to complete the season while managing it.

However, with Black still unavailable and fellow reliever Josh Edgin also perhaps still unavailable, the Mets may have to make a move in order to solidify the bullpen.

Aside from being without Black and Edgin, the Mets are also operating without David Wright and Daniel Murphy – basically playing with a 21-man roster.

Placing black on the disabled list and turning to Matsuzaka seems like a necessary thing to do, unless the Mets plan to have no regard for the rest of the pitchers in the bullpen and/or their ability to properly compete.

If Black is placed on the disabled list, it will be retroactive to August 23, when he last appeared in a game.
