Matt Harvey might throw from a mound next week

The Mets have been extra cautious while intentionally slowing Matt Harvey‘s rehab from Tommy John surgery, but Harvey might be nearing his first mound action since undergoing surgery last October:

If Harvey were to get on a mound next week, there’s a chance he would be ready to make a minor league start prior to the end of the Mets’ minor league slate.

However, pitching in the instructional league and/or winter ball is something that has been discussed by Sandy Alderson as being far more likely than Harvey returning to the big club.

Harvey has stated repeatedly that he wants to pitch in the majors in 2014, in part because he wants to remove any doubt about his surgically repaired elbow heading into the 2015 campaign.

While Harvey probably won’t appear for the Mets in 2014, pitching in the minors or in the instructional league/winter ball would hopefully give him the confidence he’s seeking entering 2015.
