Black, 25, was impressive in late 2013 after being acquired from the Pirates, but his inability to throw strikes during spring training sealed his fate.
This spring, Black posted a 5.37 ERA n 9.1 innings over 10 appearances, walking 10 and allowing 13 hits. His WHIP was an unsightly 2.46.
Over the last few days, rumors surrounding Black’s Opening Day status started to swirl, making today’s news unsurprising.
Black has tremendous potential, but he was literally all over the place this spring.
Once he straightens out his control problems, Black will likely be on the fast track back to the majors. However, the Mets were unwilling to let him straighten it out at the big league level.
With Black in the minors, it will almost certainly be Gonzalez Germen who makes the Opening Day bullpen in his place.
