The Mets announced Wednesday afternoon that they had added right handed reliever Jose Valverde to the 40-man roster.

Valverde, 36, was signed by the club to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training earlier this offseason.

Valverde’s spot in the Opening Day bullpen was all but assured prior to the club adding him to the 40-man roster, but the move confirms that Valverde will be in the pen.

Jose Valverde struggled mightily with Detroit last season, and has put together a decent spring.

However, with today’s news that Vic Black will open the year in the minors, it’s likely that Valverde will be the team’s setup man at the beginning of the season.

Aside from Valverde, the Mets have another late inning option in Jeurys Familia, but Terry Collins (wisely or not) has always erred on the side of experience when it comes to his bullpen assignments.

If Familia is able to carry over his spring training performance to the regular season, he should be able to quickly unseat Valverde as the setup man.
