Amazin’ Look Back, 9/22/1973: Mets Blank Cards 2-0

The Mets won their 5th in a row today at Shea, blanking the St. Louis Cardinals 2-0 behind the stellar pitching of Jon Matlack. Matlack went the distance, allowing just 4 hits, striking out 9 and walking only one. The Mets got all the offense they would need in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run by Wayne Garrett, his 15th of the season, off Cardinals’ starter and loser, Reggie Cleveland. Bud Harrelson, who had singled with one out, scored ahead of Garrett on the home run. The rest of the day was about Matlack, who dominated the Cardinals.

Before that, the Mets will conclude their series with the Cardinals tomorrow at Shea, with George Stone taking on Mike Thompson.
