Amazin’ Look Back – 9/11/1973: Mets Fail to Gain Ground in Loss at Philly

The New York Mets stayed in 4th place, 3 GB 72-72 St. Louis, with a 6-4 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies today, Tuesday, September 11, 1973. Jerry Koosman took the lost with 6 ER in 7 inning pitched.

Rusty Staub got things going nicely with a 2-run home run in the 1st. He hit another 2-run shot in the top of the 3rd to give the Mets a 4-0 lead.
The Phillies, however, got one back in the bottom half with a Greg Luninksi solo shot.
In the bottom of the 5th, Koosy got into trouble and looked as if he might escape, but Mike Schmidt singled home Billy Grabarkewitz. John Milner helped limit the damage by throwing out Bill Robinson at 3rd base for the last out.
In the bottom of the 6th, after a Bob Boone walk, Mike Schmidt tied it up at 4 with a home run.
2 more solo shots in the bottom of the 7th, one by Grabarkewitz and one by Luninski.
