The Mets dropped their second straight at Candlestick Park, falling to the Giants 4-1 to lose the weekend series. Ron Bryant was on the winning side for San Francisco, while Ray Sadecki took the loss for the visitors from New York.

The Amazin’ offense could not get anything going against young Bryant, who added to his potential Cy Young Award pedigree with a complete-game victory in which he allowed an unearned run on six hits and two walks. The Mets’ lone run came in the top of the fifth when left fielder Gary Thomasson mishandled a Wayne Garrett ball that allowed Jerry Grote to score from second. That was the whole story for the orange and blue at the plate: Don Hahn was the only man who managed two hits off Bryant, and Willie Mays’s nightmarish return to Candlestick ended with an 0-4 afternoon.

As for the hosts from San Francisco, Tito Fuentes was the hero of the game at the plate: his three-run homer in the fifth gave the Giants the lead for good, and his RBI double in the seventh plated the pitcher Bryant and added an unneeded insurance run to the board.
