The Giants nipped the Mets at Candlestick Park today by the score of 8-7 with a run in the bottom of the 13th. Losing pitcher Tug McGraw began the 13th by striking out Steve Ontiveros. However, McGraw then hit Garry Maddox with a pitch, and Tito Fuentes reached on a 2-base error, sending Maddox to 3rd. After an intentional walk to Bruce Miller, Bobby Bonds ended the game with a single to left.

George Stone started for the Mets and was ineffective, lasting just 1/3 of an inning. Stone allowed 6 runs (4 earned) on 4 hits, one of which being a 3-run home run to Bonds. Don Hahn had opened the game for New York with a home run off of Giants’ starter Tom Bradley. The Mets went into the 9th inning trailing 7-6, however they tied the game on an error on a ground ball hit by Felix Millan. Millan’s grounder scored Tom Seaver, who was running for Ed Kranepool.

The Mets saw their record fall to 52-62 on the season. For those reading in 2013, that’s remarkably similar to their 53-61 record today!
