Amazin’ Look Back, 8/4/1973: Cards Top Mets 4-3

The Cardinals beat the Mets at Shea today by the score on 4-3. Jerry Koosman went all the way for New York and took the loss, dropping his record to 8-12 on the season. Bob Gibson started for St. Louis and did not figure in the decision, with Orlando Pena getting the win in relief.

The Mets opened the scoring in the bottom of the second, when a run scored on error on fly ball by Ted Martinez. Jerry Grote scored on the play. The Cardinals tied the game in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Lou Brock. St. Louis then took the lead in the top of the fourth on a base hit by Ken Reitz. However, the Mets quickly tied the game in their half of the fourth when Jerry Grote singled in Ed Kranepool. The Cardinals scored the decisive runs in the top of the eighth, when Ted Simmons and Joe Torre singled in runs. The Mets scored one in the bottom of the ninth when Wayne Garrett singled in Jerry Grote, but the Mets’ rally fell short. The Mets’ record sunk to 48-58 on the season.
