After the Expos jumped on Mets starter Jon Matlack by plating three runs in the first inning, Montreal was held in check for the rest of the game.

The Mets began their comeback in the fourth, when Rusty Staub‘s leadoff home run cut the deficit to 3-1.  That’s where the score remained until the top of the seventh.  It was then, that the Mets erupted for five runs.  All of the damage came with two outs, and scored on RBI singles by Rusty Staub, George Theodore, and Wayne Garrett.  That made it 6-3 New York.

The Mets added a run in the ninth inning, on an RBI single off the bat of Ken Boswell.  That stretched their lead to 7-3 and closed out the scoring.  With close to half the season in the books, the Mets are 11.5 games out of first place in the N.L. East.
